Evacuation aids

A good evacuation plan starts with having the right equipment. In emergency situations, such as a fire or smoke, the rapid and safe evacuation of visitors, children and staff is crucial. Every second counts. That is why reliable evacuation aids are indispensable in childcare centres, hospitals and other institutions. The right evacuation aids can make all the difference during an evacuation, especially when children are present.

Our list provides a handy overview of various aids. From evacuation chairs to our special and unique rescue apron, there are various solutions available in childcare settings that can enhance your safety and that of those around you. Baby-Mover® products have been specially developed to evacuate babies and toddlers quickly, safely and ergonomically, without the carer having to walk back and forth unnecessarily multiple times. However, having the right evacuation aids is also essential in other departments. Make sure you are fully prepared for emergencies and purchase the right evacuation aids. Take a look at our list of tips and more.

List of evacuation aids

In a childcare centre, there are various evacuation aids that can be used to evacuate children and staff quickly and safely from the building in the event of an emergency, such as a fire. Some examples of evacuation aids are:

  • Evacuation chairs. Evacuation chairs are designed to help people with reduced mobility evacuate stairwells and other areas that are difficult to access. These chairs are often fitted with special wheels and handles, so that they can be easily pushed by another person.
  • Emergency beds. Emergency beds can be used to evacuate children who are not (yet) able to walk unaided. These beds are designed with speed and ease of evacuation in mind.
  • Evacuation mattresses. Evacuation mattresses are designed to be placed on the floor and can be used to evacuate children who are unable to walk or carry themselves. They are often fitted with handles so that they can be easily pushed or pulled.
  • Evacuation trolleys. Evacuation trolleys are designed to evacuate several children at once. They are fitted with safety belts and are pushed along by an adult.
  • Evacuation mats. Evacuation mats can be used to drag or carry children quickly and safely across the floor. They are often made of sturdy material and fitted with handles for easy transport.
  • Evacuation ladder. Evacuation ladders can be used to evacuate children from upper floors of a building via stairwells. They are designed to be easily pulled out by an adult and can be deployed quickly in an emergency. It is important that childcare centres have the correct evacuation equipment and that staff are trained in its proper use. Regularly practising evacuation procedures with this equipment can further enhance the safety of children and staff.
  • Baby-Mover® evacuation apron. Another evacuation aid for evacuating children is the Baby-Mover®. This is a rescue apron with three pockets capable of carrying a total of three children. Each pocket can carry a child weighing up to 9 kg; in total, it can therefore carry 27 kg whilst leaving your hands free to carry out other tasks. The Baby-Mover® rescue apron is an indispensable evacuation aid in emergency situations!

Evacuation equipment training

Having the right equipment is only the first step in ensuring a safe evacuation during emergencies. Knowing how to use them correctly is just as important. By conducting evacuation equipment training on a regular basis, you ensure that staff become familiar with the equipment and know what to do in an emergency. It is important that staff learn during such training sessions how to act under stress, how to keep children calm during an evacuation, and how to use or put on the equipment correctly.

Is there a possibility that children may be involved in your evacuation? If so, a Baby-Mover® rescue carrier is simply a must-have for your organisation and training. The (Newborn) Baby-Mover® can carry up to three babies at the same time. Furthermore, during an evacuation, the carrier still has their hands free for other important tasks.
