Childcare safety checklist
In a childcare centre or nursery, a clear evacuation plan is essential. As babies and young children cannot yet fend for themselves in an emergency, they are dependent on adults. These safety requirements in childcare centres are of great importance to ensure that children and staff can evacuate safely in the event of a fire. Safety measures in childcare
1. Presence of a fire alarm system: A childcare centre must be equipped with a properly functioning fire alarm system. This includes smoke detectors and fire alarm systems. To ensure they work correctly, they must be tested regularly and properly maintained.
2. Emergency exits: You’ll be familiar with them: the luminous, green, rectangular signs with a white figure on them above doors. Emergency exits must have such a sign, as they are easy to recognise. Furthermore, emergency exits must not be blocked.
3. Fire-extinguishing equipment: A childcare centre must be equipped with suitable fire-extinguishing equipment, such as fire extinguishers and fire hose reels. Staff must be trained to use this equipment.
4. Evacuation plans: Childcare centre staff must be regularly trained in carrying out evacuation scenarios, which have been drawn up in detail. These plans must be specifically tailored to the children’s needs and must take into account various emergency situations, such as a fire or a flood.
5. Smoke-free environment: To minimise the risk of fire, childcare centres must be smoke-free.
6. Fire-safe materials and furnishings: Fire safety in childcare settings is extremely important. Materials and furnishings must not pose any unnecessary fire risk and must therefore be fire-safe. This includes using fire-retardant materials and avoiding the excessive use of electrical appliances.
7. Supervision and training: Childcare centre staff must be trained to recognise fire hazards and to respond quickly and effectively in the event of a fire. There must always be sufficient supervision of the children within the centre to ensure that they are aware of the evacuation procedures and are able to follow them.
