In the Netherlands, childcare facilities are required to comply with various national fire safety requirements. The basics include:
- Working smoke detectors and fire alarms on every floor
- Fire extinguishers and fire blankets that must be inspected annually
- Floor plans with clear evacuation routes in visible and accessible locations

Practicing Fire Safety in Child Care
Of course, human preparedness remains an equally important part of fire safety in childcare settings. Staff members must know what to do, which is why it’s important to conduct evacuation drills on a regular basis. - Stay calm and take action. Panic is your greatest enemy and creates even more danger in an already dangerous situation. Try to stay calm: a calm demeanor gives children confidence and keeps the evacuation organized.
- Alert your colleagues and start the evacuation procedure. If you have an evacuation plan, everyone will know their role in advance. If you don’t have one, it’s important to assign the following tasks:
- Gather babies and toddlers. Babies can’t walk on their own yet. Toddlers often can, but they aren’t very fast yet and move in unpredictable ways. Speeding up the evacuation process is therefore crucial.
