What is an emergency kit?
To safely evacuate (young) children and babies in emergency situations, you need a complete and comprehensive emergency kit that prepares you for any situation. But what exactly is an emergency kit, and what does it include? A complete emergency kit consists of more than just a first-aid kit. It should include the following items:
- Evacuation plans and floor plans: A clear evacuation plan that includes emergency exits, assembly points, and evacuation routes can help employees save precious seconds. Posting floor plans in visible locations throughout the building also allows emergency responders to act more quickly.
- Flashlights In the event of a fire or power outage, it can suddenly get very dark. By keeping a flashlight within reach, you can safely find your way around without daylight.
- Fire extinguishing equipment: A small fire can quickly turn into a large one if left unchecked. With fire extinguishing equipment such as a fire extinguisher or fire blanket, small fires can be put out to clear a path and prevent a larger fire from breaking out.
- Warm blankets: In cold and wet weather, children can quickly lose body heat. Using a warm blanket helps children maintain their body temperature.
- Attendance List Maintaining an overview during an emergency is crucial. By knowing exactly which children are present that day—preferably both digitally and on paper—it’s possible to accurately verify that all children have been brought to safety. This is therefore an essential part of any childcare facility’s emergency kit.
